SANTA MONICA OPEN, 1958

Fritz Leiber took first prize with an impressive score of 7.5-.5, allowing a draw with Paul Wrangell. Mr. Leiber, who came from Chicago last summer, is a well-known writer of science-fiction and fantasy. The strong field included Gordon Palmer, a clear second, who later qualified for the State Finals. The tournament was ably directed over a period of a month and a half by Herbert T. Abel, President of the Santa Monica Bay Club. A USCF-rated event.
