A True Story by Ken Smith

In November of 1968 I zipped out to California - stopped to see my old friend, George Koltanowski, in San Francisco - then on to play in the Sacramento Open - then to Reno to Larry Evans house where Bobby Fischer was to drop by - from there, if Fischer would play, on to the American Open at Santa Monica for the two Grandmasters and this Texan. Needless to say, Fischer didn't show up - Evans couldn't come to terms with the tournament organizers on travel expenses and I had to fly on by myself to the American Open.
