North vs. South California

Atascadero was the place, Memorial Day weekend the time for the annual renewal of an eighteen-year-old feud between North and South California chessplayers. Fifty-seven avid partisans battled for each side but the result was a diplomat's delight; a 28½-28½ tie!

In special events, however, the southerners had matters all their own way. They scored 44½-25½ in a rapid transit match and won a Kriegspiel contest 4-2. Herman Steiner, Jim Cross and W. H. Steckel finished one-two-three in the state speed championship.

The North, winners of last year's match, retained possession of the team trophy while the South was awarded a special trophy for the rapid transit match. The latter emblem was created by Willard Hungerford and Jean Dupertuis of the Atascadero Chess Club. Andrew T. Stephenson, president of the local organization, made the presentations.
