Mechanics' Institute Chess Club Newsletter #470

I use computer a lot, I must admit. I check analyses, variations, and I have to do this, because everybody else does so, and one has to check and re-check everything. But I use computers a little strangely, because while I am looking at a position with one eye, I can be watching a film or doing something else as well.

1) Mechanics' Institute Chess Club News

NM Oleg Shaknazarov drew a tough fight with Expert Romy Fuentes in round 6 of the Fall Tuesday Night Marathon and retains the lead with 5.5 from 6 with three rounds remaining. Tied for second at 5 are Fuentes, NM Michael Pearson and Expert Evan Sandberg. NM Andy Lee is among those on 4.5.

Mechanics' member GM Josh Friedel lost in the first round of Khanty Mansisyk to 2700 Wang Hao of China but the other California representative, GM Varuzhan Akobian of Los Angeles, advanced in an epic tiebreak marathon with Russian GM Pavel Tregubov that lasted almost 10 hours!

MI member GM Vinay Bhat is off to a fine start in a strong open ( 9 players over 2600) being held November 21-28 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
Having just defeated Canadian IM Leonid Gerzhoy, Vinay, who is seeded 20th at 2510,  is one of 8 players that have three from three.
The official website for the event is http://www.chesspalma.com/index.php?le=en .

Sam Shankland finished second in the November First Saturday tournament scoring 7.5-4.5  against a field averaging 2452 for a performance rating of 2541. Sam, who gained 9 rating points, was a point short of the GM norm. American expatriate IM William Paschall had a good result scoring 6 from 12 to finish fourth in the 7 player double round robin.

MI Blitz tournaments results for November 18.

1. IM V.Mezentsev 10.5/11; 2. A. Ismailov 10; 3. Carlos D'Avila 7. 10 of the 12 player field were rated over 1950.
Payam Tanaka has done great work analyzing the past season of the US Chess League. One curious statistic he produced was that the Najdorf Sicilian was seen in 6 percent of the 304 games played so far ( 4 games in the league championship final between New York and Miami are still to be played). First move popularity was as follows:  1.e4 was played in 153 games, 1.d4 in 105 games, , 1.Nf3 in 29 games, 1.c4 in 14 games , 1.b3 in 2 games and 1.a3 was played once.

Shamat, the official monthly  magazine of the Israeli Chess Federation  published a complete list  of all the founding members of the International Union of Chess Journalists in
August of 1969. Among those listed are 63 representatives from 27 countries. Those from North America included Dr. Nathan Divinsky of Canadian and Ed Edmondson,. Isaac Kashdan, George Koltanowski, Ken Smith and the Mechanics' own Peter Grey who still is still a regular in the M.I.'s Tuesday Night Marathons.

FM Daniel Naroditsky is playing in the Cultural Village (formerly Sonnevanck) Tournament in Wijk aan Zee and has 2.5 from 6 in the 10 player round (rating average 2342) . The website for the event is http://www.ssij.nl/indexcvt2009.html with live games found at http://www.ssij.nl/cvt2009livepartijen.html .

2) Tanuj Vasudeva wins silver in World Youth

South Bay star FM Tanuj Vasudeva followed up his gold at Pan American Under Age 8 with silver at World Youth Under 8 in Turkey scoring 8.5 from 11.  Below is his snappy last round King hunt. Go to http://tanujchess.blogspot.com/ for a first hand account.
3) John Blackstone and Los Angeles Times games

American chess players owe a big thanks to NM John Blackstone of Las Vegas who has entered most of the games that appeared in the Los Angeles Times  from 1885 to 1985.  Go to http://www.scchess.westernchess.com/  to download them.

While many of the international games that were published in the Times can be found in MegaDatabase 2009 the same can not be said for the California battles. Among the gems to be found  is following effort that slipped through the cracks and is not in Peter Lahde's fine recent book on Kashdan published by McFarland & Company.

Kashdan,Isaac  - Prins,Lodewijk
Hollywood, 1951

Queen's Gambit Ragozin  [D39]

California 1951 ABCD-Los Angeles

Prins has a daring style. When he last met Kashdan, 14 years ago, in the 1937 International Team Tournament at Stockholm, he chose Bird's Defense to the Ruy Lopez. Their fierce struggle ended in a draw.In the following game, played November 21, last year, as another event in the Al Bisno Chess Drives, Prins goes too far. In consequence of his choice of opening, he incurs an unbearable weakness of his King's position. Then he failed to seize an undeserved chance for consolidation and, instead, loses the exchange.
