Mechanics Institute Chess Room Newsletter #290

Maybe in a year or two I will go into a monastery to clean myself. To clean myself from politics and business. To talk with God. The last time I visited the Dalai Lama in India, he said: 'If you want you can stay for a month or two.' The Pope has suggested the same to me. He offered me a cell in a monastery in Assisi. It depends on God. If I feel the moment is there I will go into a monastery.

Regarding the 1895 San Francisco - Victoria cable match, I found out recently there was a return match, on New Year's Day 1897. One game which ended in a not-too-thrilling draw:

"Fred's next guest on Tuesday evening, April 4th, 2006 will be his friend, and one of the most entertaining and knowledgable American chess professionals, GM JOHN FEDOROWICZ. In particular, John will talk about his recent and not entirely satisfactory (from his point of view) participation in the US Championship in San Diego, and how conscientiously you should review and analyze all your games soon after an important event. He will also discuss chess coaching in general and the correct approach to teaching talented youngsters plus, knowing John, anything current in the chess (or sports!) world that he has strong opinions about! Please email good questions for "Fed" to fred@fredwilsonchess.com".

Hi folks:

This week's guest on the internet radio show "Chess and Books with Fred Wilson" will be the fantastic attacking player GM LARRY CHRISTIANSEN.

The show runs from 8:00 to 10:00 PM (EST) every Tuesday evening. As always, there will be replays of the show almost immediately afterwards for our chess enthusiasts on the West Coast & elsewhere, and often there will be several replays the following day.

You can access it at the following website: http://www.chess.fm, ONLY IF YOU ARE AN ICC MEMBER (a decision with which I disagree). "Fred's next guest on Tuesday evening, May 13th, 2006 will be one of the foremost attacking players of our time, three time American Chess Champion GM LARRY CHRISTIANSEN. First & foremost, Larry will discuss his terrific US Championship result in San Diego, tying for first in Group B with GMs Shulman & Kamsky only to lose out in not qualifiying for the final against GM Onischuk because of "tie-breaks". Larry, who has also played on nine olympic chess teams, captained two others and won over twenty international tournaments, will also give his "take" on the changing contemporary American chess scene along with his current work as a lecturer and teacher. And, of course he will discuss how he came to write his already much admired manual on attacking play, "Storming the Barricades". Please send questions for GM Larry Christiansen to fred@fredwilsonchess.com".

We had late players last year and there is an easy way to solve this if, if, if I can get the programmers to work with me and install some kind of of timer so that when the players arrive late, log on and match their opponents the elapsed time is deducted automatically, and if 60 minutes has elapsed the software forfeits them so there is no arguing that the clock was off by such and such an amount of time. This might take the programmer a few hours or more but I think it would be well worth it.
