Stanford vs University of California

The annual intercollegiate chess match between Leland Stanford Junior University and the University of California was played in the rooms of the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club, San Francisco, April 14, and resulted in a tie. The matches of 1903 and 1904 were played in the same place and both ended in draws, the present year's contest being the third successive draw. Our correspondent, Mr. Wallace E. Neville, writes that the play this year was of a high order, really sensible and vigorous, to use his phrase, and the result argues well for the future of chess on the Pacific coast.
