Even though he did not take home any prize money, chess expert Harry Mayer of Oakland figured in two of the best-played and exciting games of the tournament.

At 17 Craig Barnes (Berkeley) is fulfilling the promise of his youth as he holds his own against ever stronger opposition. He came within an ace of winning first prize in the last round, but lost on time while a piece ahead to expert Bill Jones. Here Barnes spars on equal terms with USCF master Dennis Fritzinger in a short contest that both players probably felt relieved to draw.
